Cruise West has been primarily known as a small-cruise ship line focusing on excursions to Alaska and Mexico. Things have changed to say the least. On March 6, 2010, Cruise West's first-ever world cruise left port in Singapore. This isn't your average world cruise ship; it is the longest duration world cruise of modern times; a full 335-night adventure visiting 242 ports in 59 countries spanning 6 continents.

The "Voyages of the Great Explorers" as the adventure is named, will be broken up into six shorter, manageable "chapters" which are then broken down further into twenty four "segments" averaging fourteen days each. Fifteen percent of Cruise West travelers have booked two or more segments while 85% have only booked a single voyage cruise. For this maiden world voyage, there are two passengers who booked the full 11 months at sea at $250,000 a pop.

The cruise vessel is small; only 120 passengers. Without a lot of the extras on board that you would find on a large cruise ship, the focus of this trip is the destination. The voyage is designed for the educated traveler who has a great interest in history. Lecturers and local experts are on board to enhance the historical experience of the cruise. Each evening the passengers talk about their experiences of the day and are briefed for the next day's adventure. Food that compliments the regional cuisine will be available on the ship and passengers will be able to dine at local restaurants and markets.

To Cruise or Not to Cruise, The Swine Flu Question ~ "Everytime I Close My Eyes" (Acapella) Babyface

Hurricane season is about over and prime cruising season is about to begin. But do you really want to take a cruise this season with the prevalence of the H1N1 Swine flu spreading across the world?

The cruise industry would say that they have prepared for this pandemic and to yes, book your cruise.

Executive Vice President of the Cruise Lines International Association, CLIA, Michael Cyre, explained that the cruise industry is taking proactive steps "to keep H1N1 off of cruise ships and appropriately manage and treat influenza illnesses when and if they occur".

One of the ways cruise companies are relying on to keep the H1N1 virus off the ship is through the use of mandatory pre-boarding health screening questionnaires. All passengers are required to complete and sign a written questionnaire prior to boarding. If a passenger answers affirmatively to having flu-like symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose or sore throat a secondary screening will be conducted. A secondary screening will also be conducted if a passenger reports that they have had contact with with a confirmed H1N1 case. In either instance a fully paid passenger may be denied access to the ship.

Some cruise companies have started using thermal imaging cameras to screen passengers for elevated body temperatures. A higher than normal temperature may lead to a secondary screening and denial of boarding.

If you're planning a cruise this season you should check carefully the company's refund and insurance policy regarding this issue. You may find that the cruise portion of your fare may be fully or partially refunded if you're denied boarding but not your pre-boarding hotel and airfare.
But being denied boarding at the outset of your cruise isn't the only way your cruise vacation may be ruined. If a passenger exhibits flu like symptoms while under sail the ship may be denied docking at their port of call.

On June 10 and June 11, 2009, a Royal Caribbean vessel, the Adventure of the Seas, was denied entry to two Caribbean Islands. Both St. Lucia and Antigua did not let the Adventure of the Seas dock after the ship reported that three people onboard exhibited flu symptoms. But, after tests came back, it was then discovered that those persons did not have the H1N1 virus.

Last May, the Pacific Dawn, a P&O Australia vessel was denied entry to all of its ports on a 10-day itinerary. This decision was based on the ship reporting flu symptoms experienced by three persons onboard. Tests later came back negative for the H1N1 virus.

Most cruise lines will provide some sort of compensation if an itinerary is severely affected but to what degree is anyone's guess. Compensation may come in monetary form, credit towards another cruise or a combination of both.

Although the cruise industry is taking rigorous action to monitor swine flu both pre-boarding and while under sail, keep an eye on the news this season to see how it will affect cruise itineraries. With cruise ships reaching the size of small cities today the chances of a passenger slipping through the screening process increases greatly.

If you do choose to take a cruise this season, be sure to thoroughly review both the insurance and refund policies of your cruise line.

Caribbean Cruise Itineraries - Overview

A quick look around the whole Caribbean, one can see that there are hundreds of islands in the Caribbean, but of 40 – 50 make it to the world map. However only around 25 islands are regularly visited by the major cruise lines.

Although all islands are appealing in some way, all of them have that particular thing that makes them unique from one another. Some are better for shopping, others for beaches or scenic drives. Some are quite developed and some others are hardly developed. Some have piers that can accommodate several cruise ships at one time while others require that ships anchor up to a offshore (normally around a mile) and shuttle passengers back and forth in small, motorized launches called “tenders.” Big ships tend to visit the more commercialized, developed islands, while small ships are able to access the less-developed, off-the-beaten-path islands.

Typically, cruise lines divide Caribbean cruise itineraries into eastern Caribbean cruises, southern Caribbean cruises and western Caribbean cruises.

Big Ships Cruise Itineraries

Eastern Cruise Itineraries

Normally Eastern Caribbean cruises sail out from of Florida or the alternate home ports up the Eastern Seaboard. Common islands visits include

• San Juan (Puerto Rico),
• the U.S. Virgin Islands (particularly St. Thomas),
• St. Martin,
• Nassau or Freeport in the Bahamas

These are all very popular and busy ports most especially St. Thomas, Nassau, and San Juan. Grand Turk, located just east of the Bahamas is also showing up on some of these sailings.

Southern Cruise Itineraries

Southern Caribbean cruises normally sail out of Miami, typically sail round-trip out of San Juan or sometimes out of Aruba or Barbados. They often overlap with eastern Caribbean cruises and may visit

• St. Thomas,
• St. Martin,
• St. Lucia,
• Martinique,
• Antigua

Other visits can be

• Dominica,
• Guadeloupe,
• Aruba,
• Grenada

or one of the other islands in the Grenadines.

Western Cruise Itineraries

Western Caribbean cruises normally sail out of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, New Orleans and Galveston. Common islands visits include

• Grand Cayman,
• Jamaica,
• Cozumel or one of the other ports on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

This is a very popular trip by major cruise lines, thus you can easily see hundreds of other passengers at ports from other ships since often three or four (or more) ships will be visiting at the same time.

• Belize City,
• Costa Maya (Mexico)
• Bay Islands of Honduras
• Grand Turk in the Turks & Caicos Islands

Small Ships Cruise Itineraries

Eastern Cruise Itineraries

Most small ships cruise in the eastern and southern Caribbean, where distances between islands are shorter.

Instead of Florida, they may sail out of Barbados, Grenada, St. Kitts, or San Juan and visit more remote islands.

These itineraries may include visits to St. Barts, the British Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands (lush St. John as well as more touristy St. Thomas).

Carnival Cruise Lines Imagination Hosts New Kids on the Block

Carnival Cruise Lines hosted more than 2,100 fans of the pop music group New Kids on the Block during a three-day Bahamas cruise aboard the Carnival Imagination. The cruise kicked off the group’s North American reunion tour, which will run through July. During the cruise, New Kids on the Block fans enjoyed performances and meet-and-greet opportunities with the group.

Port of San Diego Notes Resumption of Mexico Itineraries

The Port of San Diego’s first year-round homeported cruise ship, Carnival Cruise Lines’ 2,052-passenger Carnival Elation, will resume its regularly scheduled Mexico voyages on June 18. The visits to Mexican ports of call were temporarily halted in late April because of the H1N1 flu virus and a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) against non-essential travel to Mexico. The CDC has lifted its recommendation against Mexico travel, and all Carnival vessels that originally visited there will return in the coming weeks.

The Carnival Elation will return to Mexico with a three-day cruise to Ensenada departing from San Diego’s B Street Pier June 18, followed by a four-day cruise to Ensenada and Catalina on June 21. The ship resumes its four- and five-day cruises to Cabo San Lucas beginning July 2. On this route, four-day cruises depart Thursdays and visit Cabo San Lucas. Two five-day itineraries are available. One departs on Saturdays and features two full days in Cabo San Lucas. Another departs on Mondays and features both Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada.

Carnival Cruise will continue to follow CDC guidelines that include pre-boarding health questionnaires for all passengers and crew and secondary screening by shipboard medical professionals as necessary. In addition, all Carnival ships stock influenza test kits and anti-viral medications for treating influenzas.

Royal Caribbean to Launch Hip Hop Dance Program

Royal Caribbean International is introducing a new Gotta Dance program designed to teach and perform hip-hop dance moves.

Based on the documentary film by Dori Berinstein, the guest-participatory Gotta Dance experience will be offered fleetwide this summer. The documentary will be shown on big screens starting in July. Gotta Dance chronicles the senior citizen, hip-hop dance troupe for the New Jersey Nets basketball team. Each cruise will feature a screening of the film. Guests on select cruise ships before the nationwide roll-out of the movie will get an advanced viewing. Participants will then be divided into teams and, over the course of their vacation, will learn choreographed routines with a member of the Royal Caribbean dance team in rehearsals during sea days.

The program will culminate with the main event -- a farewell show on the last evening of the cruise in the main theater. Each group will perform a different routine, all of which were choreographed by New Jersey Nets? Dance coach Kimberlee Garris, who also appears in the Gotta Dance film.

Shore excursions are another interesting activity. You may book it on board on the basis of first-come-first-serve. All the options and features you choose must be chose very carefully and wisely. Though it may look great to choose everything available, it might not be that wise. You may end up wasting a lot of money on things or features you won’t use

Carnival Launches Year-Round Cruise Program in Baltimore

Carnival Cruise Lines and the Port of Baltimore on April 27 launched the city’s first year-round cruise schedule when the 2,124-passenger Carnival Pride sails on its inaugural departure from Baltimore. The Carnival Pride arrived at the South Locust Point Cruise Terminal, accompanied by The Pride of Baltimore, an authentic reproduction of a 19th-century clipper topsail schooner. Following the Carnival Pride’s arrival, a reception onboard the vessel was attended by port and community officials, dignitaries and VIPs. The 88,500-ton Carnival Pride will operate 50 voyages annually that are expected to carry 115,000 passengers a year from Baltimore. The Port of Baltimore estimates that with the addition of the Carnival Pride, the cruise industry will provide an annual economic impact of $152 million and generate 1,550 jobs within the state.

With the Baltimore homeport, Carnival now sails from 19 North American departure points. “The State of Maryland welcomes the Carnival Pride and the beginning of year-round cruising to the Port of Baltimore,” said Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. “Now, tens of millions of people that live within a short drive of Baltimore can cruise anytime of the year they wish. The Cruise Maryland terminal’s unique location off Interstate 95 makes it easy for passengers to arrive and park on site.”

Carnival Pride will operate six-, seven- and eight-day cruises from Baltimore through Aug. 29. These cruises will visit a wide variety of ports, including Nassau, Freeport, Half Moon Cay, Port Canaveral and Grand Turk. The ship then will feature a year-round seven-day schedule starting Sept. 6, with cruises departing every Sunday. Two itineraries will be offered including an “Exotic Eastern Caribbean” itinerary calling at Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, and Freeport, and a weeklong Bahamas/Florida route featuring Port Canaveral, Nassau and Freeport.

Royal Caribbean International Launches Gaming Tournaments At Casino Royal Onboard

Royal Caribbean International has launched gaming tournaments at Casino Royal, its onboard casinos, on upcoming cruises.

Guests on all four-night or longer itineraries in 2009 can buy into a tournament and vie for cash prizes and a complimentary cruise for two in the cruise line’s Royal Poker Tour. Winners of these satellite tournaments also will receive an entry to the Royal Poker Tour Championship to play for an estimated prize pool of $100,000.
