You can easily get around Melbourne on the many transportation systems in the city. One form of transportation is the City Circle tram that goes by almost every attraction in Melbourne. You can hop on a tram for a professional tour or go on a boat on the Yarra River for a tour on water. You can see all the city has to offer on a tour and then decide what you would like to do or see and investigate a little further.
If you enjoy shopping you will want to see an outdoor market that is prevalent in the city of Melbourne. Oakleigh is the home of the the Oakleigh Rotary Sunday Market that takes place every Sunday. Shop for all types of food, flea market finds and antiques. All money made at this market goes to projects done in the community. South Yarra is where one of the most long standing produce markets is stationed called Prahran Market. Queen Victoria Market is in Melbourne on the corner of Victoria and Elizabeth Streets and offers many different items in Melbourne's largest outdoor market. The South Melbourne Market has been in business for over 130 years at the corner of Coventry and Cecil and this is a covered market where you will not get wet if it rains. St. Kilda Esplanade is an arts and crafts market that is right on the beach. Another arts and crafts market that has over 150 vendors is the Victorian Arts Centre Market located in the area called Southbank. Williamstown Market is a great place to visit if you are near Commonwealth Reserve.
History buffs will love all the historical sites in town. Many of them have been awarded the title of a World Heritage site and one that should not be missed is the magnificent Royal Exhibition Building. The Great Exhibition in 1880 built this building and it is one of the buildings that still stands from this event. The Parliament of 1901 was inside the building and in 2004 it was awarded the World Heritage title. The restored interior hosts many trade shows and also exhibitions dedicated to art and culture. Carlton Gardens are right outside the building and this is a place where many people of the city come to have picnics. Make sure to tour the garden with many specimens of flowers and trees and a haven for wildlife in the city.
On the north end of the garden you will find the Melbourne Museum which will impart the history of Melbourne in the Melbourne Store taking visitors from the beginning in the 1880's to the present. The Dinosaur Walk is an exhibition that shows skeletal remains of many different dinosaurs that once roamed the area. Aboriginal art and history can be explored in the Bunjilak Aboriginal Center. See what kind of insects are in the area in the Bugs Alive area and see what the forest area in the area is like in the forest gallery. Kids will love the Children's Gallery that is specific to kids three to eight. You can even go see a moving in the largest IMAX theater in town next to the museum. Taking a tour of the museum will also take you to the Royal Exhibition Building and through the garden. Hours are from 10 am to 5 pm.
Another historical site worth seeing is the Old Melbourne Gaol Crime & Justice center which is one of the oldest buildings in Melbourne. This was the first prison and held 136 people, many of which were hanged for their crimes. There are tours during the day but the night tours are probably the most exciting of all. Experience this tour by candlelight if you have the stomach for it. The site is open from 9:30 am to 5 pm with night tours occurring 4 nights a week.
Because of its location Melbourne gives visitors the opportunity to take part in many outdoor activities. There are several heritage trails in the city and along the beaches where you can walk or bicycle and see the history of the city.
