RV Types - Described and Explained ~ RV Today Archive- Luxury Resorts

The several categories of recreational vehicle (RV) types will be explored. Each type of RV will be discussed in terms of what it is and some of its features. There are basically seven types of RVs, with many makes and models available for each type. The seven types are:

• Pop-up
A pop-up camper is a 2 wheel unit that can be towed behind a van, pickup truck, or SUV. It is soft sided, collapses down for towing, and cranks up for camping use. It would have a sink, stove, and small refrigerator. A pop-up would most likely be used for weekend outings and vacations, sleeping four fairly comfortably.

• Truck Camper
A truck camper attaches in the bed of a pickup truck. It is generally a hard sided unit, but some have soft sides that require the unit to be cranked up for use. It would have a small kitchen, furnace, A/C, and sometimes a bathroom. A truck camper would again most likely be used for short duration outings as the interior is small, sleeping 2 comfortably.

• Trailer
A trailer camper is generally a 2 axle unit that requires a pickup truck or van to tow it. These rigs are hard sided units with many available features. You could expect to find a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room, furnace and A/C in these units. They are designed for long term living, with the floor plan determining how many can comfortably be accommodated, which is usually between two and six.

• Fifth Wheel
A fifth wheel camper is a trailer type that has a hitch point that attaches the unit into the bed of a pickup truck. These units can be quite elaborate and large, with wall slide outs that increase the available living space. You will find all features for full time living, including kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, etc. They are usually designed for two people, but would have space for one or two guests.

• Class B
A class B is designed on a van chassis, with the interior converted for living. These units have all of the features needed for long term living, just on a smaller scale. Their main advantage is that you can use them as your living quarters and also as your main source of transportation. They are designed for use by two people.

• Class C
A class C is a motorized unit designed on a large truck chassis. There will be a sleeping area over the cab and a main sleeping area in the rear. Again, all standard features are in these rigs, including kitchen and bathroom. They are set up for long term or full time living for two people, with space for two guests comfortably.

• Class A
A class A is the large motorized unit that can approach the size of a bus. They have all the features necessary for full time living, with king size beds and some times a second bathroom available. They are designed for use by two people for extended living and/or travel. The units can be either gas or diesel powered. They can tow a car, which is needed for local transportation when traveling in a class A.

7 Great Things to Cook When Camping ~ How To Cook Seven Simple Recipes Over a Campfire

Camping makes you hungry, doesn't it? Even if you've relaxed all day long, all it takes to make your stomach rumble is the wonderful smells from your neighbor's campfire wafting through your campsite. What is that delicious smell? Instead of desiring your neighbor's fare, cook up some savory entrees and side dishes of your own over the campfire. The usual fare comes to mind when considering cooking over open fire. However, how about some new and exciting ideas for camp cooking? Consider these seven great things to cook when camping for your next holiday.

1. Marinated Meats - it's so easy to marinate meat while you enjoy summer activities around the campground. Simply slip chicken breasts, pork chops, or steaks into a zippered bag and then add your favorite marinade. Allow the meat to soak up all the wonderful spices and flavors from the marinade and then grill it over the open fire. The meat will be moist and delicious.

2. Cook it in a Can - cook vegetables like canned green beans, corn, okra, or pork 'n beans right in the can over the fire. Recycle a metal coffee can into a camp cooker. Layer your meat, vegetables, and potatoes in a large coffee can. Cover the top with heavy-duty foil and then place the can right on top of the hot coals (not a rip-roaring fire). Allow it to cook for roughly 40-50 minutes or until the meat is cooked through.

3. Breakfast - oh, the wonderfully inviting smell of eggs, pancakes, and bacon cooking over the open fire on a chilly camp morning is enough to get anyone out of the sleeping bag and seated at the picnic table. Use an iron skillet to cook up sunny-side eggs, bacon, or fluffy pancakes. Simple fares that will keep everyone full until lunch for sure!

4. Brats, Burgers, and Dogs - you simply can't go wrong with the traditional camp food, so be sure to include these in your lunch or dinner menu at least once during the trip. Spice things up by offering toppings like salsa, cheese, and pickle relish along with tomato sauce, mustard, and mayonnaise.

5. Foiled Again - aluminum foil is excellent for cooking up fresh fish fillets, chicken breasts, and pork chops. Add a bit of your favourite salad dressing, veggies, pearl onions, and red potatoes, and seal the packet. Everything will be cooked in no time.

6. One-Pot Meals - just like at home, one-pot meals are great for camp cooking. Toss the ingredients for a great pasta dish or a hearty stew into one pot and cook it over the fire. Voila, dinner is served!

7. Hot Beverages - with a pot of boiling water, you can have instant coffee, creamy hot chocolate, or a wonderful mug of tea in a short amount of time. Heat up apple cider over the fire and add a few cinnamon sticks for a wonderful fall beverage around the campfire.

There's really no limit to what you can make on your next family camping trip as long as you're willing to think outside the box and be creative when planning your meals. Try some of these ideas and see if your neighbors aren't looking your direction and wondering what you're cooking!

Ray Stevens - The Camping Trip, What to Consider Before Buying a Family Camping Tent

When shopping for a camping tent, there are several things you should consider in order to get the right tent for your needs. A weekend spent in an inadequate tent can turn a retreat into a misery!

Portability: First, examine where you will be camping and how you will be getting there. If you plan on hiking to your camping destination, a small tent which folds into a small package and can be strapped to a backpack will be a necessity.

If you own a compact car, a camping tent which collapses into a small space will also be a necessity. But if you own a large vehicle, you are less constrained by tent size or break-down features.

Square Footage: While your car size or destination will have some effect on the size of your tent, it must be balanced by how many people will be sleeping in the tent. Many camping tents estimate the number of adults it will sleep by assuming everyone is of average size and will sleep shoulder-to-shoulder. Most people do not want to sleep this close to others, not to mention that large people will require more space. When in doubt, get a larger tent.

Material: Camping tents today generally come in two types of material: nylon and canvas. Nylon tents are inexpensive and can easily be found at sporting goods stores and discount retailers. Canvas tents are harder to find and often must be ordered from a company which sells historic reenactment goods. They are also considerably more expensive.

The benefits to canvas tents, however, is that they tend to last much longer and are much less prone to leaking. There are even canvas tents with a roof-height of 6' or more, allowing an adult to stand upright in them. The drawbacks are: they are heavier than nylon tents, take up more space in a car, and typically require many large poles to set up. Some models are nearly impossible for one person to set-up alone.

Price: As mentioned, the choice of material will have a great impact in the price of your tent. Size too will have some impact, as will special features, such as multiple rooms or porches. But the main consideration when it comes to price is: how often will you use the tent? If you plan on camping once or twice a year, an inexpensive tent will serve. However, if you plan on camping regularly, or for long-periods of time, or in all weathers, it would be best to spend the money upfront and buy a tent which will be both comfortable and long-lasting.
