As well as the river London is famous for large open spaces of green and you can escape from the almost constant noise of this City that simply refuses to sleep for a moment into the delightful parks like St. James' Park which lies behind Downing Street where the British Prime Minister has his official residence. Surprisingly you can wander the length of the Mall and still be in St James' Park down passed Duck and even Pelican Ponds to Buckingham Palace where the Queen of Great Britain has her official residence. You can even check to see if she is at home by looking to see if the Royal Standard is flying above the Palace. You will be lucky to see her 'at home' though because the Queen favours Windsor Palace which is about 20 miles to the west of London where it is quieter and less polluted. London is a sightseers' dream, there is always something around the corner, from the blue plaque on the wall of the flat where Jimi Hendrix died at the back of Oxford Street to the beautifully restored St Pancras station now home to the International Rail (Channel Tunnel) Rail Service but for so many years a derelict condemned building. At night even more of London comes alive and as well as being able to enjoy some excellent free live music in the cafés and bars there is the exciting sight of the river-scape alive with lasers lights and often fireworks. London is not to be missed and that is why it is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world and so it is probably no surprise that there are enough hotel beds in London to sleep the populations of dozens of major cities worldwide! The London 2012 Olympics The city of London has been looking forward to hosting the 30th Olympic Games since beating out their rival, Paris, to be awarded the event. They were awarded the games on July 6th, 2005 beating out Moscow, New York, Madrid and then finally Paris in the last round. London will become the first to host the Summer Games three times and, while the Games in Beijing are a hard one to follow, London is working hard at putting its own stamp on the event. The London 2012 Olympics will take place between July 27th and August 12th, 2012. The Games are expected to attract thousands of tourists in a city that is already popular with visitors and crammed with it's own locals. In preparation, London is revamping their transportation system in order to be able to cope with the influx. Improvements to the transportation network were key in winning the bid and the goal of Olympic organizers is to have 100% of spectators arriving by public transport and 80% of athletes a short 20 minute commute from their event. The London 2012 Olympic venues will be a mix of old and new facilities, including some historic London landmarks. Anxious not to repeat the Millennium Dome mistake, organizers have been sure to include plans for downsizing venues for use in the future and some will be temporary or moved to a new location after the Games. The London Olympics have not been without controversy, the major issue being financing. A budget of £5.3 billion was announced for the building of infrastructure and venues for the Games and a further £1.7 billion has been earmarked for the regeneration of the Lower Lea Valley where much of the Games is to be held. Various other costs are expected to add a further £2.7 billion to the budget. With the amount of money being spent, there are many vocal anti-Olympics groups. The logo has also been a source of controversy due to the poor response it has received along with the amount spent on it. The fact that the logo, that popular opinion says sucks, cost £400,000 has angered a lot of people. Tickets are due to go on sale in the spring of 2011 with an estimated 8 million tickets available for the Olympics and 1.5 million for the Paralympics. The London Olympics will feature 26 sports and 38 disciplines with baseball and softball being dropped from the Games 2 days after London was awarded the bid. Women's boxing will be an event for the first time. The London 2012 Olympics are being touted as the eco-friendly Games, and a lot is being done to assure that they are environmentally friend and sustainable. The city's waterways are being regenerated and a large amount of parkland is being set aside for visitors to explore. London is a fantastic city with a lot to offer any visitor, even when the Olympics aren't on. The Summer Olympics is sure to bring with it a fantastic atmosphere and bring London's multicultural residents together while still maintaining a friendly rivalry. Historic Hotels in London - Antiquity and Accommodations ~ Jeff Kashiwa "Hyde Park"

The recorded history of London goes back over 2,000 years; legend has it that the city was founded by Brutus of Troy after he battled and defeated the giants Gog and Magog to gain control over the site. Today, London is home to numerous historical sites and buildings, attracting millions of tourists each year. Not least among these attractions are the grand hotels in London, each with its own unique stories to tell. Among the historic hotels London boasts, a few stand out from the rest.

The Langham

Since it was built in 1865, the Langham has been a centre for culture and society in London. Catering to an exclusive clientele, the hotel has provided accommodations to well-known guests including Mark Twain, composer Antonin Dvorak, conductor Arturo Toscanini, Noel Coward, Somerset Maugham, and Oscar Wilde. It was at the Langham that famous explorer Henry Stanley made preparations for his fabled journey to Africa in search of Doctor David Livingstone. The Langham's well-deserved reputation for discretion was forged during the courtship of Wallis Simpson by Edward VIII within its walls. The Langham truly earned its own immortal place in history during World War II, however, when it served as the base for BBC broadcasts by Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, and American journalist Edward R. Murrow.

Brown's Hotel

Brown's of Mayfair bills itself as the first hotel ever to open in London; founded in 1837 by Lord Byron's valet, it has witnessed nearly two centuries of London history. Brown's was the site for the first successful telephone call made in Great Britain; Alexander Graham Bell accomplished this feat in 1876. The International Niagara Convention, held in 1890 at Brown's, established alternating current as the standard throughout the world. Other famous guests of the hotel include Theodore Roosevelt, Napoleon III, Rudyard Kipling and Agatha Christie.

The Savoy Hotel

Renowned as London's most famous hotel, the Savoy Hotel was founded in 1889 by Gilbert and Sullivan as an adjunct to their Savoy Theatre, located just next door. The Savoy Hotel's access road has the distinction of being the only location in London requiring traffic to use the right hand side of the road; a number of reasons have been offered for this, but the most plausible is that the theatre is on the right side of the road, and this requirement was instituted to allow guests to exit cabs more conveniently. The Savoy Hotel was the first to have electric lights and elevators; these amenities were made possible by the profits Gilbert and Sullivan realised from their partnership. In a sense, the Savoy is the hotel that The Mikado built, since its success made the hotel's construction possible. The Savoy's first manager, Cesar Ritz, went on to found the Ritz chain of hotels, but not before being involved in a scandal involving the misappropriation of a large quantity of wine and spirits from the Savoy's cellars. Famous guests of the Savoy include Claude Monet, James Whistler, and Oscar Wilde; it has also been a particular favourite of the Royal Family and provided the setting for Princess Elizabeth's first public appearance with Prince Philip.

These represent only a small fraction of the historic hotels London has to offer travellers. The Cadogan Hotel, for instance, was the site of Oscar Wilde's notorious arrest and set the scene for Lillie Langtry's surreptitious courtship of the future Edward VII; the Millennium Hotel in Mayfair claims the honour of being the site where Wellington's victory over Napoleon was first announced. The Wigmore Court Hotel boasts that William Pitt once made his home within its walls, and the Edward Lear is named after its most famous owner and resident. Travellers and holidaymakers can choose between a wide array of historic hotels in London, each with its own unique set of stories to tell.

The capital of the UK is a place worth visiting. Getting there is not hard since the city is the home to Heathrow airport, the largest in Europe. This gives it the privilege of being served by most airlines around the world. To get into London Paddington, there are many alternatives depending on the much you are willing to spend.

There is the Express Rail that usually gets you there in a short 15 minutes since it does not make intermediary stops along the way. The slowest and cheapest is through London Underground where the trips usually take about an hour. If you have heavy luggage or are traveling with your family, then you might want to consider getting a cab instead. There are black cabs, more expensive and can be got right from the street and then the mini cabs that usually involve advance booking.

If you are from another European city like Paris, you could take the high speed rail route if you prefer not to fly. You could also take the long distance buses if you like. Driving into the heart of the city is not always advised but it is one of the means of getting there. The transport network in the city is one of the most comprehensive in the world. But even with that, the best way to go sightseeing in the city is by foot because London only appears big on paper. The city is what you would call compact and therefore walking would be a delight. Cycling is always an alternative, albeit sometimes not the best one.

It is said that London is one of the most expensive cities in the world and if you are not too careful, you could end up spending so much more than you were willing to. Accommodation is on top of that list and you need to make sure that you make adequate reservations if you want to snatch the best deals and prices. But in any case London has an array of five star London Hotels you can choose from. The only burden for you would be to choose which one works best for your finances. Eating comes second, and like in any other city, you could get a good bite for a good price but when you want exclusive dining, you should be looking to spend about 80 Euro for a good meal coupled with wine. If you choose the leading restaurants in London, then that price is likely to double.

For your attractions like the Museums, most of them are free to enter though donations are usually encouraged. But some like Madam Tussauds Wax Museums is simply overpriced though it remains one of London's best attractions.

London can easily pass as one of the world's greatest city but time is the only factor that is hindering the baptism. But still, it is one of those places creates a harmony between the nostalgic past and the present, in such a way that it compels you to visit.
