Bangkok Cycling Tours

SpiceRoads Cycling Adventures in Asia has introduced a new half-day cycling tour of Chiang Mai, Thailand. This cultural tour takes a memorable and informative route to this northern city’s most interesting sights and beyond the old city walls to see temples, markets and ancient ruins. Some of our stops are well off the tourist track so riders will get to see and experience a different Chiang Mai from most visitors. With more than 300 temples, or wats, in Chiang Mai the importance of Buddhism in Thai culture is evident, and how that pervasiveness filters down to everyday life will be explained by the guide.

The leisurely cycle tour of 18 miles starts along the banks of the Ping River, passing a former leprosarium where the manicured, quiet grounds next to the river and the colonial style white and cream buildings, including a church with flying buttresses, are worth a look. Then the ride heads to the ancient city of Wiang Khum Kham which dates back to the 13th Century. Just rediscovered in the 1980s after being buried under mud from the river, most of the sites are ruined chedis, however, there are two working temples to visit -- one of which has a spirit house where a former king’s spirit is said to reside.

The tour is suited for all riders, including families, and the riding is on good quality flat tarmac roads. An air-con support vehicle will follow and provide water and fresh fruit. There’ll be plenty of opportunities for taking photos and just taking in the wonderful scenery. The tour includes a hotel pick up and drop off from Chiang Mai hotels, bicycle and helmet, air-con vehicle support and refreshments during the ride.
