Six Good Reasons to Take a Family Vacation ~ Johnson Family Vacation " Fantastic Voyage "

brought to you by: AHMTRAVEL.COM
By Jolana Klobouk

When I was young, family vacations with my parents consisted of driving for a week from place to place in a hot stifling car. My parents had the knack of picking the hottest week of the summer to do so. In spite of that, we still had fun, managed to find interesting sites to explore and those are the memories that I still have.

I discovered the joy of travel to far reaching destinations on my own by the time I turned 18. Jumping on a plane and heading off to Brazil, Europe or cruising the Caribbean, has turned into a life long passion my whole family now enjoys with me.

Family vacations have evolved over the years. There have never been more choices, more variety and more options available for family vacations as there is today. Especially since 9/11, the focus on family and community and played a strong role in our society. The travel industry has noticed and has geared up for families. From all-inclusive vacation packages and cruises, which are equipped with kids clubs and special activities; to resorts that supply a nanny for your stay, it's never been a better time for families to travel.

Still not sure? Here are just a few of the benefits of taking a family vacation:

1. The family that plays together, stays together.....

It is a time to get away from it all. Away from work, the phone calls, the kid's activities, the daily to do list. This is a great opportunity to spend time as a family and get to know each other. Go for a hike, build a sandcastle, explore a museum. There is more time to talk and spend time together without the daily distractions.

2. Teach your children well....

Travel is an excellent learning tool for kids. They can have the opportunity to learn about things first hand they may have learned in school, read about or saw on TV. Any destination can offer this learning experience whether it is a few hours drive away from you home or in Europe. Family vacations will teach children about different cultures, food, history, geography, climate, environment and so much more. The best part is that it's way more fun for them then learning it through homework!

3. New experiences they will never forget.....

Family vacations provide a whole new venue for experiences that your kids never would have had otherwise. We took a family cruise last winter, and it was my 9-year-old son's first cruise. We told him all about the ship and showed him pictures but I don't think he could quite grasp what it was really going to be like. We landed in Fort Lauderdale and as we were driving to the port, we could see our ship in the distance. He was excited but still very nonchalant. Once we got to the port and pulled up alongside the ship, he looked up and up and up at the enormous ship, his mouth dropped open and he gasped in amazement. That reaction was worth the price of the whole trip and is something I know our family will always remember.

4. Life is an adventure, especially on vacation....

Even if you are not particularly brave there are still many ways to experience the adventures that lie in every corner of our planet. It may be as simple as going to the zoo at your destination and seeing the animals that are local to that habitat or taking a jungle tour though the Amazon. There is so much to see and do, pick the adventures that appeal to your family and do them together.

5. You kids won't be kids forever....

Doesn't seem like yesterday that the teenager that just borrowed your car, was in diapers and day-care? Most parents agree that time seems to fly by quickly and those babies are grown before you know it. There will come a time that your children will have lives of their own and sad as it may seem, spending time with Mom and Dad will not be anywhere near the top of their list. Take the time for a family vacation while they still want your company.

6. Time to kick back and relax......

Now this part is important. One of the main reasons to take a vacation is to get some rest and recharge. It is important for everyone so don't over do it. Try and schedule an active day followed by a more relaxing day. It's hard to do in some destinations where there is so much to see and do like Disney World, but trust me. The kids will be less tired and cranky and it will give you a reason to come back to the destination again!

I know this all sounds so good, it makes you want to book that trip you've been putting off doesn't it? Well, I will add in a dose of reality here and include a few negatives. There are some natural stresses to traveling. Planes get delayed, kids get cranky, families can have too much of a good thing and get on each others nerves. The list can go on, but don't let that discourage you, the advantages are too numerous to ignore.

So whether you choose to pack the kids in the car or fly to more exotic destinations, the benefits are the same. As far as memories go, we tend to remember the good things; the time spent together as a family, the new things that were discovered, the new friends we made, the places we saw. This is what your children will remember and, the fact that you were there with them to enjoy it.

3 Day Cruises For You ~ Carnival Glory cruise ship events, parties and activities

brought to you by: AHMTRAVEL.COM

By David Patullo

If you are looking to have a great time during your vacation but don't have enough days to actually go on a luxurious cruise, then you might want to consider 3 day cruises. These are really great trips for people who want to have a quick getaway but can't be bothered with too much preparation. You can be assured quality as you visit different destinations, be overwhelmed by the experience, and also have the same amenities and facilities that you get from a normal two to four week cruise.

The advantage of a 3 day cruise is that it is also very affordable since the cruise will only last for 3 days. Plus, it's a practical solution for those who do not have that much time to spend away from or work. The cruises are short and always held on weekends making it convenient for anyone who is employed or still in school. You also don't have to pack so much to enjoy this cruise. The cruise line will take care of all of your needs.

There are different places that you can visit depending where you live. So if you live n a place like Los Angeles, you can probably take a cruise to Mexico and take a couple of days just soaking in the sun. If you live in Florida, then you can easily make a trip to the Bahamas or even to Freeport. It all depends on the season and summer is usually the best time since most cruises happen around that time.

David has been writing articles for nearly 2 years. Come visit his latest website that discusses home security and the best security systems for homes and great ways to find the best security systems for home that will make you feel safe during the night.

The Top 5 Pre-Trip Checklist For Golfing Holidays ~ "Greatest Hits: The Songs of Golf" Whose Line

brought to you by: AHMTRAVEL.COM

By Roderick Dunne

Planning a standard holiday usually consists of a regular to-do list (visa applications/currency exchange/travel insurance/etc.). For the holidaying golfer, there are a number of additional items on their to-do list to check prior to travel to make sure your holiday goes well. The following should cover the essentials for most golfers.

A few weeks before departure

  • Medication & First Aid: A simplified first-aid kit should be prepared for packing. If you intend golfing each day then any minor injuries can really take their toll over your holiday so prepare to bring aspirin, plasters, insect repellent, indigestion tablets, diarrhea medicine, sunscreen, contact lenses (and spare ones), spectacles and travel sickness medicine. Most of these could be picked up on arrival but doing that would eat into your holiday time. A worthy addition is heat packs and cold packs as the muscle strain involved in golfing daily may prove more than your body can take.
  • Course bookings: Confirm the tee-times of your bookings at your holiday destination. Print them out along with directions to the course, exact tee-time and any booking references that may be needed. If a tee has been booked via an online agency then these details should have been sent to you by a confirmation email. If you book rental clubs/buggies then also check these are confirmed.

Week of departure

  • Clothing and Shoes: Check the dress code for each club you intend playing and prepare some suitable clothing. Pack a variety of layers so you may add/subtract a jumper or thermal undergarment should the weather require it. Look up the short range weather report to see if you need to alter the balance of items (e.g. to include more layers if it is going to be cold/raining). Pack sunglasses, caps and beanies. Check your rain gear is packed and in a good state of repair. Inspect the cleats on your shoes replacing any broken ones. Cleats near the toe are especially important for maintaining grip under foot so you could rotate broken cleats to the heel if desired. Clean the shoe soles of all soil/grass (see below).
  • Documentation: Print out addresses and directions to the courses you are going to. Check the clubs website for any course guides, yardage information or specific course rules. These can be worth reading prior to a round in order to get your bearings. Pack your proof of P.G.A. handicap. Some courses impose a maximum handicap for golfers permitted to play so your handicap proof may be necessary.
  • Golf Clubs and Equipment. Inspect & count your clubs. Clean them and the bag of any soil. Some destinations (Ireland, U.K., Australia, etc) have policies regarding the dangers of bringing potentially contaminated soil into a country. Confirm you have an adequate stock of pencils, tees, golf balls, golf towels and gloves for the duration of the trip (you can pick these up at the holiday destination too) and that your umbrella is in working order.

The goal of this list is to ensure you can enjoy your golfing holiday to the utmost from the first to last day.

Roderick Dunne is an IT Innovation Manager of 17 years and is currently on a brief career sabbatical spending his time travelling Europe, blogging and golfing. His latest blogging project is the Golfing Holidays Portugal Guide.

Riding Arizona, Experiencing the Desert on Horseback ~ "By The Time I Get To Arizona" Public Enemy (Black History Month)

brought to you by: AHMTRAVEL.COM

By Bayard R Fox

The dramatic beauty of Arizona is hard to match. Seeing it on horseback is electrifying and far more satisfying than glimpsing it from cars and planes.

The emotional experience of Arizona's ancient geological marvels can be overwhelming. Some of them have inspired paintings, literature, music, movies, marriages and visions. The Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly are stunning enough to warrant separate rides.

- The Grand Canyon covers approximately three thousand square miles, most a mile below sea level. The Colorado River flows through this colorful and massive rift in the Colorado plateau, which is also host to hundreds of vertebrates.

- The iconic sandstone buttes of Monument Valley rise a thousand feet above the Colorado plateau just west of the four corners area. These famous rock formations have been used in many commercials, movies and videos.

- Canyon de Chelly, meaning the canyon in the rock, consists of Navajo lands now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. One of the park's most distinctive geologic features is Spider Rock, a sandstone spire 800 feet tall.

But there's more.

Arizona is also a state with strong cowboy traditions. This is plain to see in the old working ranches that dot the countryside. Some of them boast fine horses and many borrow from the tradition of the vaquero. The western saddle used by American cowboys today came from Spain via Mexico to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and California.

The Navajo, whose traditions dominate this area, have preserved their ancient culture here for centuries. Their lasting important influences include handcrafts, music and animal husbandry.

Riding Arizona on horseback gives you the chance to see the country upclose while enjoying a historic and natural mode of transportation. Some of the best terrain for invigorating gallops is in the west, and Arizona has more than its share. On horseback, you can get into the heart of a place at a comfortable pace to see what the mass of tourists miss. It is their great loss and your gain.

Around the world, local people are far more likely to open up to horseback riders than to tourists spilling out of buses and cars. A ride in Arizona is a chance to experience geology, flora, fauna, culture and legend that simply cannot be apprehended in a flyover or a drive by.

Bayard Fox has been riding for 70 years on six continents and has ridden enough miles to circle the globe several times. He is owner and founder of Equitours Worldwide Horseback Riding Vacations. He and his wife also own the Bitterroot Dude Ranch where they raise and train Arabian horses.

"Crab Feast" Food Network ~ Crazy About Blue Crabs?

brought to you by: AHMTRAVEL.COM

By Carol Alleyne

Crab lovers know that one of the best edible crabs are the blue crabs. The Blue Crabs are found in the western Atlantic Ocean. Chesapeake Bay, Maryland is famous for their abundance of tasty blue crabs for income, food and recreation. The blue crabs are also found in Virginia, Baltimore, Maryland, New Orleans and Florida. The crabs are harvested using crab pots, dredges, dip nets and hand lines and sold commercially either as hard-shelled or soft-shelled crab. Crabs that are caught before the new shell has time to harden are called soft-shell crabs. Soft shelled crabs are available for a longer period of time in warmer waters such as the Gulf of Mexico.

The picked meat from the backfin area of the crab is used to make cakes, soup and other dishes. The soft shelled crab is a favourite delicacy with it's slightly sweetish taste can be enjoyed baked, fried or grilled and also be cooked and eaten whole, shell and all. Crab cake is a favourite among the blue crab lovers of Maryland and very easy to make by just binding the meat from the soft shell crab - mayonnaise with bread crumbs or crackers and a modest amount of their traditional Old Bay seasoning. Another familiar tradition with the Maryland Families who love crab is feasting on delicious hard crab and crab cakes for the Christmas holiday season. Growing up as a child in the Caribbean the most enjoyable way of eating crab is curried: you cook it with curry powder mix with your other ingredients and boil down to form a thick gravy in coconut milk it's mouth watering.

If you love eating crab and don't want the hassle of having to clean them, you can order your crab online. It is so easy now to get your fresh crab delivered to you right to your door, you have the choice of ordering live crab which is packed with the freshest and liveliest crabs caught the day that they are shipped or order them steamed so you're sure they won't perish. Or you can order delicious prepared crab meals made with their special blend of mild seafood seasoning and a great way to enjoy a variety of other seafood.

For more information on Maryland Blue Crab and where to get your delicious cooked crab meals to order go to: www.squidoo.com/maryland-bluecrab.

A Brief History of Atlantic City ~ Bruce Springsteen "Atlantic City"

brought to you by: AHMTRAVEL.COM

By Peter Sandler

The first boom: before 1945

After the first group of tourists arrived by train in 1854, Atlantic City quickly became known as a great summer time getaway, especially for people living in Philadelphia, which could be stifling during the summer. Beyond the visitors that arrived by train, many also came by ship, soon leading to the city becoming a major port city. However, due to a number of accidents and ships that sank, the city was never able to compete with some of the larger and more established New England ports despite the erection of Absecon Lighthouse. In 1878 a second, faster, rail connection was opened and from this point on Atlantic City took off as the choice vacation destination for not only people in Philadelphia, but for people throughout New England.

By the start of the twentieth century, Atlantic City was a booming resort town that was utterly dominated by enormous luxury hotels, though there were also plenty of lower cost boarding houses available as well. This period saw a massive extension of the Boardwalk (originally constructed in 1870 as a practical measure to stop people from tracking sand into all the town's establishments). By the 1920s, and continuing on through the 1940s, the city became the premier "hot spot" for America's rich and famous, from U.S. presidents to all the greats of early film and theater. This represented the apex of AC's popularity and was when the city became known as "The World's Favorite Playground". However, this boom did not last, the post World War II period saw a rapid decline in the city's fortunes.

Decline and recovery

As happened with many of the older cities on the East Coast, the post war years saw a dramatic decline of fortune. Those with the resources moved out to newly built suburbs, leaving only the poor in the city center resulting in more crime and less investment. At the same time the advent of air conditioning meant the summers in Philadelphia were not as unbearable as before, so more people decided to stay home. The ride of the personal automobile meant that many of the visitors that did come only came for day trips or for weekends, unlike the old train visitors who would usually stay for one or more weeks, instead of days. Further, the rise of commercial air transportation meant that the rich and famous could easily go to more exotic locations, like Florida or California for the summer. All of these factors and others resulted in Atlantic City slowly devolving into a massive urban slum, and most of the tourist industry collapsed.

In an effort to revitalize Atlantic City, in 1976 New Jersey voters approved a state referendum introducing casino gambling to Atlantic City. The first casino opened in 1978 and many more followed suit immediately afterwards. The mid-1980s also saw a massive crime wave in Las Vegas, which resulted in Atlantic City briefly holding the title of America's number one gaming destination. However, after Las Vegas cleaned itself up, Atlantic City went back to being the second most popular gambling destination in the United States and has remained in second place ever since.

Although it took longer than many would have preferred, the gambling industry did eventually revitalize much of Atlantic City and the 2000s saw an unprecedented boom with all of the major casino resorts (check this one) undergoing massive renovations as well as the emergence of new casino resorts, like the Borgata that opened in 2003.

Air Travelers’ Usage of SMS, Email and Social Media (Stats)

brought to you by: AHMTRAVEL.COM

What media air travelers choose to inform their friends and relatives about their flights, provided with a choice between SMS, email and social media? See our latest stats on that topic.

ArrivedOK is the service that notifies your designated recipients about your arrival to airports worldwide. Users can choose how to send those notifications – by SMS, email, or via social media/networks.

Our latest stats say that despite all that social media buzz, people still prefer SMS and good old email. Perhaps because email notifications are free of charge at ArrivedOK, one might say, but that’s not the case: ArrivedOK provides all social media alerts for free too but they show dramatically lower popularity.

Here is the percentage of all ArrivedOK arrival notifications by media channels (March 2009 – January 2010; See the graph here - http://blog.arrivedok.mobi/?p=1382 ):

Twitter - 6.0%
LiveJournal - 0.8%
Facebook - 2.3%
Email - 30.9%
Blogspot - 1.1%
SMS - 58.8%

We would say that Twitter is doing fine, Facebook is overrated, and Blogspot and LiveJournal numbers reflect the decline of blogging.
